From today's featured article
The New Jersey (BB-62), also known as the "Big J" or "Black Dragon", is an Iowa-class battleship that was in service from 1943 to 1991, and is the most decorated battleship in American history.
Carrying nine 16-inch guns each, the New Jersey and her sister ships the Iowa, the Missouri, and the Wisconsin were the ultimate evolution of the battleship, the heavily armed and armored ships of the line that were the basis of sea power for three centuries. They were the longest, fastest, and most technologically-advanced battleships of all time.
Built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, she was launched a year after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and served in the Pacific theater of World War II against Japan. She continued through the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the ending of the Cold War, making her one of the longest-serving battleships of the 20th century. She is now a museum ship based in Camden, New Jersey.
