Some concerns have been raised about Encyc's biography policy, whether any policy actually exists and what it ought to be.
* Anyone dead more than twenty years is fair game for a biography
* Anyone dead less than that time, or who is alive, should not have a biography on Encyc
* Exceptions: heads of state and government

Many of Wikipedia's problems have come from its biography articles, particularly the "biographies of living persons". Jimmy Wales has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal as saying, "I'd be happy to have, in theory, a good, neutral biography on every single person on the planet...
Administrators are authorized to remove personal information when they find it. Posting real names, telephone numbers, or addresses of individuals is grounds for blocking under the "threatening/harassment" option. Note that this site has very few administrators and we are not guaranteeing that we will find everything.

I've also noticed that very few contributors to Encyc have written biographies of living people.
Most privacy violations will be removed quickly on-wiki by our volunteers.  If for any reason this process fails or if you need to reach someone privately, please email [email protected].

==Proposals==
What I'd like to propose is:

# We continue to treat biographies on a case-by-case basis
# Biographies of presidents, congressmen, and federal judges are acceptable (within reason)
# Alison handle biography issues, since it seems to be something she's interested in
# If the volume of biography submissions exceeds one per month, we come up with a more concrete policy

Any articles about a living person, or discussing them, should have all facts and statements confirmed by reference to a '''reliable source'''. Any unreferenced statements or ones supported only by unreliable sources, and any links to such unreliable sources, may be deleted. The statements should not be reinstated unless and until a reliable source is found.

Further, in no circumstances should links give real names or alleged real names of people who have not said that they want their real name publicised.

''Emperor comments: Encyc:BLP, although not written by me, appears fair enough and would avoid hurting some peoples' feelings.  Saying things about "Poetlister" or "Proabivouac", as long as we leave real names and identities out of it, does seem fair enough.''  [http://encyc.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Emperor&diff=9699&oldid=9685] This rules out linking to documents allegedly giving people's real names.

Biography policy

  • Anyone dead more than twenty years is fair game for a biography
  • Anyone dead less than that time, or who is alive, should not have a biography on Encyc
  • Exceptions: heads of state and government

Administrators are authorized to remove personal information when they find it. Posting real names, telephone numbers, or addresses of individuals is grounds for blocking under the "threatening/harassment" option. Note that this site has very few administrators and we are not guaranteeing that we will find everything.

Most privacy violations will be removed quickly on-wiki by our volunteers. If for any reason this process fails or if you need to reach someone privately, please email [email protected].
