Epistemia was a wiki encyclopedia website that was created as an alternative to Wikipedia. It was founded in 2009 by a man from New Zealand who had moved to South Korea and felt that many critics of Wikipedia were right about Wikipedia's numerous faults. The reason the site was created was because the founder wanted to put some critics' ideas for an alternative wiki-based encyclopedia into practice. Whilst it was widely discussed from inception on Wikipedia mailing lists, and many people contributed to the foundation upon which Epistemia was to be built, it received little outside attention. A Korean language version of the site was also created, albeit with less articles in it. Around five major contributors were responsible for creating a large percentage of the content hosted on it. The site was shut down in 2010, probably because of the low frequency of participation and a perceived lack of success. The name of the website derived from the Greek word for knowledge, epist me, as it was meant to be a center of knowledge. After being shut down, Epistemia faded into obscurity, its content fully deleted.
