Drum and bass is a genre of music, which originated from the early Rave scene in the United Kingdom. It was mostly popular between 1995 and 2000. Drum and bass could be considered an evolution, or even a sister genre, to Jungle music. In fact, from 1994 to 1997 circa, the two styles were quite similar, as they both relied on drum samplings exactly equal to, or derived from, the Amen drum loop. It was after 1997 that drum and bass started diverging in a significant manner, as styles oriented towards science fiction sounds, heavy basslines, and simplified beats (known as techstep and neurofunk) became popular among music producers. Some people argue that the main styles, or at least the ones that are most popular among producers are darkstep, techstep, neurofunk, and hardstep. The tempo is generally between 170 and 180 beats per minute, but it can also be faster or slower than that range in certain cases. Optical and Ed Rush are often credited with the creation of the neurofunk genre, starting with their album Wormhole released in 1998. Typical instruments used to make this music are a synthesizer, samples, drum machine, keyboard, sequencer and a personal computer. ==Genres, subgenres and similar== *Jungle music *Atmospheric jungle *Techstep *Neurofunk *Darkstep *Hardstep *Drill and bass *Sambass *Liquid funk *Clownstep ==Common samples== *Amen drum loop *Reese bassline ==Artists== *1.8.7 *AK1200 *Alix Perez *Amex *Antichristus *Audio *Axiom *Bad Company UK *Black Sun Empire *Break *Brockie and Ed Solo *Brokenspud *Bulletproof *Calyx *Cause 4 Concern *Chris.SU *Concord Dawn *Cooh *Corrupt Souls *Counterstrike *Current Value *Cyantific *DB *D-Bridge *Dillinja *Dom & Roland *Donny *Dylan *EBK *Echo *Ed Rush *Eiton *Elisa do Brasil *Evol Intent *Ewun *Fierce *Fresh *Friction *Future Cut *Goldie *Gridlok *Heist *Hive *Ill.Skillz *Ink *K-Tee *Keaton *Kemal and Rob Data (also known as Konflict) *Kemistry and Storm *Lemon D *Limewax *Loxy *LTJ Bukem *Matrix *Muffler *Noisia (also known as Drifter) *Nu Balance (also known as Skinny, Skinnista and Ali Ash) *Optical *Optiv *Pao *Paul Reset *Peter Kurten *Phace *Proket *Prolix *Raiden *Ror-Shak *Ruxspin *Shivaxi *SKC *Skynet *Spor (also known as Unicron) *Stakka *State of Mind *Tamas *Teebee *Technical Itch *Teknik *The Panacea *The Prodigy *The Sect *The Upbeats *Timecode *Typecell *Universal Project *Usual Suspects *Vector Burn *Vicious Circle *Zardonic ==Labels== *Architecture Recordings *Breakbeat Kaos *Cryptic Audio *Cyanide Recordings *Dom & Roland Productions *Moving Shadow *Nerve Recordings *Offkey Music *Perkussiv Records *Project 51 *Renegade Hardware *Underfire Records *Virus Recordings ==Examples== *Mix of Techstep tracks *Example of Neurofunk *Mix of Darkstep tracks *Jungle / Drum and bass: Logical progression 2001
