In her later years, Hepburn dedicated much of her time to [[Encyc|UNICEF]], contributing since 1954. From 1988 to 1992, she worked in some of the poorest regions in Africa, South America, and Asia. In December 1992, she was awarded the US [[Encyc|Presidential Medal of Freedom]] for her efforts as a [[Encyc|UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador]]. A month later, she passed away from [[Encyc|appendiceal cancer]] at her home in [[Encyc|Vaud]], [[Switzerland]] at the age of 63.
